Part 091 – Finale

My opponent took his hand off mine, and aimed it up in the sky.

" SUPERNOVA! "

Nothing happened.

" Ha… haha! That’s it then, eh? "

I felt a tremendous amount of energy release from his body, the amount seemed to be nearly every ounce of power that he possessed, only a trickle stayed. His body and mind weakened noticeably.

I paused. " Hmm. Did you do something? "

I stepped off him and gazed up into the sky. Everything appeared to be normal. " Was that some kind of ultimate trump card? It didn’t do a thing, you old fool! Gwahahaha! "

Hoarhiim weakly crawled to a sitting position on his knees. " I have learned many interesting things as of late. This child knows of a great human philosopher who once said ‘Knowledge is power’. And since I possess knowledge that you don’t, I possess power that you don’t. "

I guffawed. A good bluff, as usual. Is this all Hoarhiim had become? A fantastic bluffer? I had expected so much more from him. When had my old rival turned to tricks and deceit? Was he not a warrior of the light?

" Hoarhiim, this is why I will rule the labyrinth someday, and you will not. Your age is starting to finally show. "

I chuckled softly to myself. However, Hoarhiim was not laughing. His face was completely blank, as he gazed up… at the sun. I turned around to look. Nothing had happened… why was he constantly looking upwards?

Hoarhiim sighed. " Humans invented a concept many ticks ago. It is a concept called Science, one you and I are far too old to understand. Truth be told, I would not know of Science were it not for the mind of this youth whom I have paired with. "

He continued. " To be brief, there are two things you must understand. The first is called the speed of light. Light travels at 186,000 miles per second. Nothing currently exists that this child knows of that can break the speed of light. " He turned his gaze from the sun towards me.

" The next thing you must understand is what a supernova is. A supernova is caused when a star explodes. The sun, up there, in the sky, is a star. "

I nodded. " Alright, I see now. But you’ve made a mistake. " I beckoned towards the in the sky. " It hasn’t even exploded, you IDIOT! Gwaaaahaha! "

Hoarhiim smiled a gentle smile at me. " You still don’t understand. I don’t know at what speed my magic travels, but it’s likely the Sun has already exploded. The light of its explosion simply hasn’t reached us yet. "

I stopped laughing and paused to consider his words. " Wait… could you mean… it will reach us soon? "

Hoarhiim nodded. " The child does not yet understand the power of the Crown of Solomon. He is still a young whelp. But… I do. I have already made the calculations. The light of its explosion will reach us in four minutes, twenty-two seconds. "

He nodded at me slowly, knowingly. " And the instant you and I see it, we will already be dead. "

My heart stopped when he said this. Could it really be true? I have no idea if he’s telling the truth but… in all the years I’ve known Hoarhiim… like a good little child of the light… he’s never once lied to me.

" Hoarhiim… you must be jesting… if it explodes, we will both die. "

Hoarhiim stared at me, deep into my soul. " No, Blaarjiim. Have you forgotten? My orb is not with this child. I am safely hidden, elsewhere in the labyrinth. As I said, since the start, I have already won. "

My mouth gaped open and I fell to my knees. " You… you tricked me. You planned this… from the start. "

" Nay, I did no such thing. I merely made the most of an impossible opportunity. It was you, Blaarjiim, who devoured all the life on this world. If even a single soul were left, I would not have had the will to destroy the Sun. It was you, Blaarjiim, who destroyed the return path to the labyrinth. Had you not done that, this would have been an ultimately futile move. I made the most of the opportunities you gave me, but you… you are the one who created these opportunities. "

Hoarhiim got over, and walked up to me, placing his hand on my shoulder.

" Blaarjiim, it is you who killed your queen. "

For the first time, in my entire existence, I felt something deep inside me. Anguish. Sadness. Raw, previously untouched emotion.

" No… I can’t… my queen, she… "

Hoarhiim took a step back. " And as for this child, he will not die on this day either. You couldn’t win even a single meaningful battle on this desolate unforgiving world. Farewell, brother. "

And before I could make a move, he said a single word.

" Return "

The boy’s body vanished.

  1. Is it named finale for the reason this is the end, or because it’s the end to the battle-brawl-whatever? (yes, I know the reference) Because I still remember the dream he had about fighting Satan, was that not to come to reality? So many questions left still unanswered. Pleaaase let there be more I’d been procrastinating on my homework waiting for this

    1. Nobody said the dream would ever become reality. I mean think about it, Amelia was fighting by his side in the dream, and look where she is now…

As for ‘is this the end’ OF COURSE NOT LOL

      1. I definitely think one of your talents that shows in your story telling is combining elements from so many other sources of media. From fun little references to concepts and mechanisms, again derived from a wide range of places – mangas, books, and movies.

I hope you continue writing and growing during the process, delighted to have been able to witness it from the start 🙂 I’ll encourage you on patreon soon, just saying 😉

See dis shit keeps me going you know, that and comments, chatting on discord, and MANY MANY UPDOOTS!

          1. haha awesome. Keep it up, I think there’s a real chance you can make this your job, just have to figure out how to grow to make the most out of this little sapling of a world you have!

    1. Right now I’m working on a compilation PDF of the first chapter, all of its parts. When I’m done, I’ll write some more.

Also, this PDF will have a lot of fixes and elaborations all throughout. Expect the story to change a little bit here and there.

      1. Omg. I’m so excited! Also, I’ve been holding back this whole time. There are so many mistakes that I just blew past since I was in awe of how fast you were writing. One of my favorite things is editing. If you’d like a second look (not that I’m worthy) I’d be happy to try to help! (Even after you released a section, so I’m not looking for early access or anything.)

Also…I am so blown away that you just blasted “chapter one” at us!! How long do you plan to make this?! I’m so excited!! My emotions are all over the place!

          1. Well I’d love to help!! My only issue is that I would be editing from a phone. It is harder to make it easier to see the issues when one mobile. My poor computer met an untimely death, recently, due to a roommate who was drunk and bumbling around our house. I’m working on getting it fixed so that I can play video games again, but I’d be willing to try to help even in this state. I remember a lot of things that I just glossed over.
